“We began on a wing and a prayer in December 2001. A group of Roots music fans, whose regular
watering hole was the Williamstown RSL, pooled together $50 each to organise a gig featuring the
Hornets. With the approval of the RSL management, we spread the word around town that blues music
was coming to the West. Up until then, we had to travel on the road and across the river to enjoy quality
live music. It was a gamble, but it paid off, giving us the confidence to build on that success. Now, years
later, we are an Incorporated Club hosting some of the best roots musicians in the country and receiving
calls from international touring artists eager to come Way Out West. After the Williamstown RSL Sub-
Branch closed in 2016, we had to find a new home nearby. After considering several options, we are
now at Newport Bowls Club, where we are thriving. As the great Paul Kelly song goes, ‘From Little
Things Big Things Grow’. We are proud to have become an integral part of the roots music scene and to
have created a much-needed venue in the West”.
