For many decades, The Rainbow Hotel in Fitzroy has been a cornerstone of Melbourne’s blues scene — a place where generations of musicians, fans, and industry figures have come together to celebrate live music. From its early days hosting late-night jam sessions to its role today as one of the city’s most trusted live venues, The Rainbow has helped sustain and grow the culture of blues in Victoria through consistent programming, fair treatment of artists, and an unwavering belief in the power of live performance.

Over the years, The Rainbow’s stage has welcomed some of Australia’s most respected names in blues and roots — including Chris Wilson, Fiona Boyes, Lloyd Spiegel, Collard Greens & Gravy, Jules Boult, Jimi Hocking, GeoffAchison, Anna Scionti, and The Teskey Brothers — along with enduring staples such as the Paul Williamson Hammond Combo, whose remarkable residency has spanned more than 30 years. The venue has also hosted celebrated performers like Ash Grunwald and Paul Kelly, whose appearances highlight The Rainbow’s reach across Melbourne’s wider live-music culture.

Just as importantly, The Rainbow has given a stage to countless local and emerging artists — players who cut their teeth in its front bar, built friendships and followings, and helped keep live blues and roots music alive week after week. This ongoing support for musicians at every level has made the pub a vital hub for the community and a beacon for audiences who value authenticity and connection.

Along the journey, the broader blues community has sadly lost a few truly great artists who were an unforgettable part of The Rainbow’s story. Their absence has been deeply felt, but the love and support shown by fellow musicians and fans alike has been a powerful reminder of the connection this music continues to inspire.
