Allan Stafford, the boy from Walthamstow, born with a love of music, a magical tenor himself and cricket in his heart. Migrating to Australia with his family in the 70’s to settle, only to find himself and wife, known to the MBAS world as Dolly raising a family and traveling overseas often.
It was those travels, to the States, to the South, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, meeting and watching the greats, Muddy Waters and BB King play that ignited Allans passion for Blues Music. Once back in Australia, he became aware of the gap in our Country with regards to awareness and publicity around the hidden Blues Talents Melbourne had. Enter the late Dutch Tilders, and Allans life changed forever. In 1990, a group of Blues Music Lovers gathered around a few too many red wines, and the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society was born! The MBAS quickly attracted musicians at its weekly Station Hotel jam nights, originating from Dutch playing and inviting people up to play. The MBAS provided a place for musicians and music lovers to come together and over the years garnered much support, and in addition to fund raisers, provided an opportunity for Blues Musicians to travel to the States and showcase their talents. Allan championed youth in Blues with his unwavering support of some our now not so young Lloyd Spiegel and Shannon Bournes, ensuring the stage was always a welcoming and safe space for young musicians to shine.
Allan and Dolly have long since left us, but their legacy lives on through the beautiful music community created by the MBAS. A testament to Allans commitment in helping to shape such an amazing and thriving Blues Music Scene.
